LOUISA VIRGINIA

The Problem:
These agencies are far too draining of our national treasure relative to the threat against our national security. Rather than being under close congressional scrutiny in the past they have used as “earmark babies” by congressmen to provide “pork back home.”
Background:
Our military has the weaponry to completely annihilate the whole world tens times over and more. This capability was developed during the cold war when we were in a nuclear standoff with the Soviet Union. We have got and are continuing to develop star-wars type weaponry for which there is NO threat. Yet we are unable to easily defeat terrorist organizations that are living in caves. Something is wrong here.
Every day we all undergo indignant searches at airports yet tests show that threats can easily be sneaked onto aircraft. After billions spent on a security wall between the US and Mexico, thousands of illegal immigrants and untold illicit drugs continue to penetrate our border. Less that ten percent of the cargo coming into the country is even looked at. Something is wrong here.
Our government, with the help and cooperation of Microsoft, Google and Yahoo, is BIG Brother watching us. We have sacrificed much of our freedom via the “Patriot Act.” The intelligence community bungled pre-warnings of the 9/11 attack and then gave misleading information that led us into the unwarranted war in Iraq. Some is wrong here.
The Solution:
In a word – cutback
For congress to get into a scramble to cut back these agencies would only lead to infighting and confusion. Furthermore, these agencies are far too complex for uninformed outsiders to determine appropriate organizations.
Instead, the congress and administration should come up with agreed to simplified mission statements for each department and then provide each department with funding two thirds of their current budgets. Then let each agency determine the best organizational structure for accomplishing their respective mission within their allocated funding, leaving politics out of it.
