LOUISA VIRGINIA

The Problem:
Our Congress is essentially dysfunctional. Campaign financing by “special interest groups” allows them to unduly steer legislation toward the lobbyist’s ends rather than for the benefit of the people and the nation.
Background:
We have the best government that money can buy, albeit near dysfunctional. Our laws do not keep pace with technological or social changes.
The “sensationalist” media focuses on everything bad that happens. The “24 hour news cycle” has become the “24 second news cycle” because of cable news and the Internet. Our politics has become overly polarized to the extreme ends of the political spectrum. It is risky for any politician to suggest bipartisanism.
The Solution:
Many areas need to be examined including such political issues as “gerrymandering,” term limits, campaign finance reform. A “bipartisan commission” should be established to review and recommend political reform. A Constitutional Convention Commission should be formed to review other alternatives.
